Studies show that people who have lost weight by dieting alone gain
most of the weight back after a year. However, people who increase
their physical activity are more likely to maintain the weight loss
after a year. Exercise therefore, improves your rate of weight loss and
increases your chances of keeping it off.
Most people quote lack of time as the major reason they are less active
than they'd like to be. One way to overcome this issue is to introduce
some activity into your current daily schedule. You'd be surprised how
much exercise you can 'accumulate' in a normal day, just from doing
things a little differently. For example, climbing stairs instead of
taking a lift is an easy way to become more active. Climbing stairs is
a very hard activity that really gets your heart going. If you can
accumulate 10 to 15 minutes of stair climbing each day you can
significantly increase your calorie-burning rate. If you normally
travel 2 or 3 levels in an elevator, try and take the stairs each time.
If you happen to work on the 20th floor, take the elevator to the 16th
or 17th and then walk the rest. Maybe increase the number of flights
you walk every week or so.
If you spend a lot of time on the telephone, try standing or even
walking around if you have a portable phone. Walk across the hall to
consult a co-worker rather than call them. In the home, there are lots
of activities that add up - vacuuming floors, mowing lawns. A little
bit here and a little bit there all contributes to your calorie burning
and fitness. As you become more active and energetic (and see the
results on your scales) you will probably want to become a bit more
adventurous, so read on and learn about walking your way to weight
control. In the meantime, think of all the things you do during the day
that you could help burn calories if you made a small change to the way
you do it. And keep the following in mind:
- You don't have to perform vigorous exercise.
- You don't have to join a gym unless you've been advised to.
- A little bit here and a little bit there can all add up to a better you!
