While proper cholesterol levels are important to good health, the evidence demonstrates that elevated blood cholesterol levels together with other risk factors, may greatly contribute to cardiovascular disease.
Cholesterol is transported in the blood by lipoproteins. The major categories of lipoproteins are very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL).
VLDL and LDL are responsible for transporting fats (primarily triglycerides and cholesterol) from the liver to the cells of the body. Elevations of either VLDL or LDL are associated with an increased cardiovascular risk.
In contrast, HDL is responsible for returning fats to the liver for metabolism. A high HDL is associated with a low cardiovascular risk.
When cholesterol levels increase in the blood and are not cleared properly by the liver, the cholesterol may deposit in the arteries at sites that have been damaged, weakened or inflamed due to free radical activity.
These cholesterol deposits or “plaques” can contribute to cardiovascular disease, one of the leading causes of death.
Remember that elevated cholesterol levels may be a major cause of cardiovascular disease but cholesterol is not the only contributing risk factor, other important factors to consider are homocysteine levels, blood pressure, inflammation, cortisol levels, insulin resistance, obesity, stress, hormones, lifestyle, diet, toxicity, medical history, physical exercise, and hereditary factors. Hereditary factors may be positively influenced by a healthy diet and lifestyle.
