Constipation treatments

Constipation is something that affects many of us over the course of our lives. It is caused by many things and can be simply a short term problem or an indicator of more serious conditions. Constipation can be managed by improving our diet and eating more fibre rich foods, by exercising and making sure that we are drinking enough fluids. If those measures don’t work then there are a range of different products that can be used to assist with bowel regularity.

As a first step we recommend Benefibre or Mucilax. Both these products introduce more fibre into your diet which creates more bulk and stimulates your bowel to move things through. Mucilax is good product to start with as it is slightly more effective than Benefibre. However, Benefibre is much more pleasant to take so as a rule we recommend starting on Mucilax and then moving to Benefibre once good bowel habits have been established.

If you have been taking Mucilax and Benefibre and not getting the result that you want then the next step would be to try a natural product like Phloe Healthy Bowel. This product is relatively new and the feedback is very good. Nulax is an older alternative and is popular with many people as well.

If these products are not helping then it is worthwhile talking with your pharmacist to see what other products may be of use to you. We have options including stimulant laxatives like Coloxyl and Senna that actually stimulate the bowel to move the contents through. Another alternative that is popular with doctors and specialists at the moment is Movicol.

If you still have problems then something like Microlax enema works very effectively and quickly to move the contents of the bowel. Microlax should be used after discussion with your doctor.

If you find that your bowel habits have suddenly changed or are irregular, that your constipation is worsening or if you find what looks like coffee grounds in the toilet after passing a motion then it is worthwhile visiting your doctor to discuss whether there are more serious issues causing your constipation problem.
