Protein
is a major component of all body tissues. It is needed for growth and
repair, and for regulation of body processes .Fat is a concentrated
source of energy. Fats are carriers of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E,
K).Carbohydrates are the body's most readily available source of energy
and should comprise a liberal percentage of daily calories. Vitamins
help regulate body processes and repair body tissues.
Minerals
give strength (rigidity) to the body structure, maintain water balance,
and regulate body processes. Water is essential for transporting
nutrients and regulation of the body's temperature. It helps eliminate
waste products from metabolism .Fruits, vegetables, whole-grain breads
and cereals, low-fat and skim milk products, and lean meats, fish, and
poultry are nutrient-dense foods. As a group, alcoholic beverages and
foods high in fats and sugars are calorie-dense, or empty-calorie,
foods.
