Does it seem like everyone around you is sick? Do you easily succumb to
the illnesses of your family or co-workers? Do you wish you could be
one of those lucky individuals who seem to be able to fight off the
bugs better than others do? Maybe it is time for you to consider
another benefit of exercise. Not only will exercise help you maintain
your weight, it can boost your immune function.
Your body ordinarily makes a variety of special white blood cells to
fight infection. The more of these cells you have, the better you can
fight off colds, flu's, and other ailments. Even cancer cells are
attacked by these special white cells. When the numbers of these
special white cells are high, your immunity is high. Research shows
that people who exercise moderately at least once a week tend to have
higher immunity than people who don't exercise.
One study specifically found that women who walk 45 minutes per day, 5
days per week, suffer about half as many colds as women who don't
exercise. Studies have shown that colds may go away much faster for
exercise enthusiasts. On the other hand, intensive training such as
training for a marathon tends to reduce immunity, making individuals
more vulnerable to illness. The key to improved immunity is balance.
Include moderate exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle to arm
yourself against bugs - and don't forget that exercise also reduces
stress!.
