Proper use of an Infant Formula is important to the health of the infant. Social and financial implications should be considered when selecting a method of feeding. Bayer NZ Ltd., Auckland.

Novalac Anti-Reflux formula can help control infant reflux by keeping the stomach contents down and protecting the oesophagus from acidity. It is liquid in the bottle, but thickens when it reaches the stomach.

The effects of refluxReflux (regurgitation) often occurs in infants because they have an immature or weak lower oesophageal sphincter, which allows acid stomach contents to return to the mouth.

It usually happens following a feed and is extremely common – an estimated two thirds of babies regurgitate more than once a day.

Although some babies with reflux do not seem upset by it, the acidic stomach contents can cause pain and irritation of the oesophagus.

Untreated reflux can lead to an increased risk of ulcers during adulthood. As the lower oesophageal sphincter matures, the signs of reflux lessen, with symptoms usually resolving by 12-15 months of age.

Reflux symptoms are usually treated with thickened formulas, which tend to be less sensitive to gastric contractions, so they are less likely to be regurgitated. However formula that is thick in the bottle can cause air to be ingested while feeding and may be less palatable to infants.

Purpose:

How Novalac Anti-Reflux helpsNovalac Anti-Reflux is liquid in the bottle for easy feeding, but thickens as a result of specially treated cornstarch, when mixed with acidic stomach contents, effectively preventing reflux.

It is a casein-dominant formula. Synergy between casein and the treated cornstarch results in a homogenous curd which, together with the product?s low osmolarity, facilitates gastric emptying and further reduces the chance of regurgitation.

Novalac Anti-Reflux is nutritionally complete and can be used even when the reflux symptoms improve.
