There are times of the year when you are expected to 'eat, drink and be
merry', which can test even the most disciplined weight watcher. The
best way to handle such occasions is simply to accept that there will
be some 'splurges', and to try and counteract 'treats' with healthy
eating choices wherever possible.
For example, the occasion calls for ice cream. Eat the ice cream on the
understanding that you'll now skip the dessert or the glass of alcohol
you had planned later. If you have a choice of cone or cup (or dish)
take the cup option. If appropriate, ask the server for half a scoop.
And of course, if you remember the energy in vs energy out formula you
know you can counteract the ice cream calories by extending your
exercise program that day or week.
When it's the festive season, set realistic goals. For example, don't
aim for weight loss over the period, but set a goal of not gaining
weight. Allow yourself the freedom to have the special festive treats
in small portions and pass on the foods that you know you can have any
other time of the year. You may feel less deprived and less self
conscious if you limit portion size rather than totally avoiding the
special occasion foods.

enjoying fresh and healthy food. Take a trip to a fresh produce market
