What is Ashwagandha?
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is an herb that is extensively used in Ayurveda, the traditional herbal system in India. Ashwagandha is used as a general tonic and & ''adaptogen'' helping the body adapt to temporary normal stress. In addition, preliminary data suggest that Ashwagandha supports a healthy immune system.

In Ayurveda, Ashwagandha is generally considered Rasayana, a substance able to influence life forces towards a healthy balance and an integrated relationship with the environment. In the west it is known as an adaptogen which enhances the individual’s healthy reaction to challenges of a physical, chemical or biological nature. Studies have shown Ashwagandha may promote healthy sleep patterns (the name somnifera is Latin for ‘sleep-inducing’). Ashwagandha contains substances known as ‘withanolides’ and it is these bioactive constituents that provide the adaptogenic effects.
