FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Lysine?

Lysine is one of the 21 amino acids that the body uses as a building block to create a wide range of the proteins it needs. It is described as an “essential amino acid”, which means that, unlike many other amino acids, the human body cannot synthesise it. The body must therefore rely on dietary sources to obtain the Lysine it needs.

How does the body use Lysine?

Lysine is a critical building block of many of the body’s proteins, including collagen – an important component of skin and connective tissue. This means Lysine can help to maintain healthy skin, cartilage, tendons and ligaments. Additionally, because the body uses it in building muscle proteins, Lysine may support the body in recovering from sports injuries or surgery. Other uses include assisting with Calcium absorption and energy production.

How does Lysine assist customers experiencing a cold sore?

Research suggests that Lysine may assist the body in fighting a cold sore infection because it has been shown to discourage the cold sore virus from replicating. This then allows the body’s natural defences to better fight off the virus, and heal the damaged skin. Lysine also assists in general wound healing, and is helpful for skin repair.

What are good dietary sources of Lysine?

The richest food sources of Lysine tend to be either animal products (meat, poultry, eggs, some types of fish, and some types of cheeses), or legumes such as soy and other beans, peas and lentils. Some greens such as spinach, and grain-like seeds such as amaranth, quinoa and buckwheat have reasonably high Lysine levels.
